Overview

Grade 430 Stainless Steel Coil is a ferritic, straight chromium (16–18%) alloy combining excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness. Its non-hardenable nature makes it ideal for automotive trim, kitchen appliances, architectural cladding, and heat exchangers. With magnetic properties and thermal conductivity superior to austenitic grades, it excels in stainless steel heating coil and stainless steel coil tubing heat exchanger applications.

1. Tensile Strength

Grade 430 delivers a minimum tensile strength of 450 MPa, ensuring structural integrity under mechanical stress. This robustness supports high-pressure applications like stainless steel coil tubing heat exchanger systems, where resistance to internal pressure and thermal cycling is critical. Its elongation (>22%) permits deep drawing and stamping without fracture.

 

2. Bending and Formability

Despite being ferritic, Grade 430 exhibits superior bendability due to low work-hardening rates. It withstands stretch forming, bending, and drawing operations, making it optimal for stainless steel coil wire and complex fabrications like exhaust manifolds or appliance housings. Post-bend annealing (760–815°C) restores ductility if embrittlement occurs.

 

3. Identification & Certification

Coils comply with ASTM A240, EN 10088-2, and JIS G4303 standards. Each batch includes a mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with heat number, chemical analysis, and mechanical properties. Laser-etched logos specify grade (e.g., "SUS430" or "1.4016") for traceability.

 

4. Weight Calculation

Calculate coil weight using:
Weight (kg) = Thickness (mm) × Width (mm) × Length (m) × Density (7.75) ÷ 1000
Example: A 1.5mm × 1219mm × 1000m coil weighs ≈14,200 kg. Tolerances adhere to ASTM ±5% for mass.

 

5. Corrosion Resistance & Rust Prevention

While resistant to nitric acid and organic acids, Grade 430 may corrode under prolonged exposure to chlorides or acidic environments. Rust occurs if:

  • Chromium oxide layer is damaged by abrasion or contamination.
  • Intergranular corrosion arises from carbide precipitation (400–600°C).
  • Galvanic corrosion results from contact with dissimilar metals.
