Technical Attributes
Tensile & Bend Strength
304L and 316L stainless steel pipes exhibit tensile strengths of ≥485 MPa and yield strengths of ≥170 MPa, ensuring structural integrity in HVAC systems under high airflow pressure and thermal cycling. Their ductility (≥40% elongation) allows bending into complex duct layouts without cracking, critical for custom HVAC installations. For stainless steel schedule 40 pipe applications, these grades maintain dimensional stability at temperatures up to 870°C, making them ideal for industrial exhaust systems.
Weight Calculation Formula
Weight per meter (kg/m) = (OD – Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 0.0248
Example: A stainless steel schedule 40 pipe with OD 114.3 mm (4 inches) and thickness 6.02 mm:
Weight = (114.3 – 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.0248 ≈ 16.3 kg/m.
Identification Marking
All pipes are laser-etched with:
- ASTM/ASME standard (e.g., ASTM A312).
- Grade (304L/316L), OD, thickness, heat number, and manufacturer’s logo.
- Traceability codes compliant with EN 10204 3.1 standards.
Why Does Stainless Steel Rust?
Although 316L offers superior corrosion resistance due to 2-3% molybdenum, both grades may corrode under extreme conditions:
- Chloride exposure: Prolonged contact with coastal air (>500 ppm chloride) or de-icing salts degrades the passive chromium oxide layer.
- Mechanical damage: Improper use of stainless steel pipe tape during installation or abrasive cutting tools exposes unprotected metal to oxidation.
- Galvanic corrosion: Direct contact with carbon steel or copper in humid environments accelerates rust formation.
Manufacturing & Customization
Processes:
- Cold drawing: Enhances surface smoothness (Ra ≤0.5 μm) for HVAC airflow efficiency.
- TIG welding: Seamless joints for stainless steel seamless pipe systems in high-pressure ducts.
- Solution annealing: Heated to 1,040–1,100°C to eliminate carbide precipitation during welding.
Custom Options:
- Threading: NPT or BSPT threads for secure connections using stainless steel pipe tape.
- Sizing: Stainless steel schedule 40 pipe available in SCH 5S to SCH 160 for variable pressure requirements.
Applications
- HVAC ducting: Corrosion-resistant airflow systems for commercial buildings.
- Industrial exhausts: High-temperature stainless steel seamless pipe for fume extraction.
- Sanitary ventilation: Electropolished 316L pipes for pharmaceutical cleanrooms.
